with their final undergrad exams out the way, and the deadline for project reports a distant three weeks away, cumc old guard ed bray and ed wheatcroft took up the challenge. in classic cambridge fashion, we overthought it to the extreme and created a spreadsheet with routes, descents, target completion times, and even the rockfax page and route number. armed with a paper printout, a good weather forecast, and a sense of optimism we left cambridge after dinner on wednesday may 9. we arrived at north lees campsite a few hours later, pitched our tents, and settled in to get some sleep before the fun began. as we lay in our tents listening to the rain hammering down outside that night, we thought we’d made a big mistake! thankfully the morning light brought relief and as wheatcroft pulled onto the first route of the day ( heather wall ) at 08:14 the rock was bone dry. a mere three runners later and he was over the top, then bray was up and we were both back down and ready for the next route well within our calculated 16 minutes per route. did we otherthink this? very possibly. we’d decided to lead blocks of three before swapping over, so it was 09:03 before bray got a chance to lead, pulling off the ground of via media then spending valuable time faffing placing the first nut of the day. daft mistake: cams are way faster to place and remove. that extra time all adds up, and if this got out of hand we’d be finishing in the dark! the archetypal gritstone sloper route of hargreaves’ original followed, though fortunately the gods of friction smiled down on us and the send train remained on time. up next were some real gems, including the ever classic inverted v and perfect hand jamming traverses on ellis’s eliminate and rubber band. in a desperate bid to accelerate our progress we had both decided to second routes in our approach shoes, which worked fine until the thin and delicate vs 5a of robin hood’s cave innominate reared its head. bray led the pitch in short order, but in his haste to second, wheatcroft did what can only be described as ‘doing a timo’ and took a fall off a vs. hoping this would be the only one of the day wheatcroft sheepishly lowered to the ground before finding a cheeky approach-shoe-friendly foot traverse to bypass the move which had defied him. 11:19 saw us standing at the bottom of the technical crux of the day: via roof route . now graded hvs 5b, it’s hard to imagine how hardcore you must be to think this was vs. bray drew the short straw and was soon teetering up the bold start, then dispatched the roof in short order. being less gifted in the art of roof climbing, wheatcroft found the going much trickier. wheatcroft looking scared at the bottom of via roof route , safe in the knowledge that it was bray's lead. wheatcroft’s next block had some great lines in it, especially the top-50 classic that is mississippi buttress direct . afterwards, hell crack lived up to its name, offering a strenuous thrutch from bottom to top, especially for bray who suffers from a severe shortage of any jamming skill whatsoever. 12:27 at the top. the next few routes passed in a haze, and then we arrived at the baw’s crawl area. sadly we weren’t there for the laughably-unusual hvs, and instead for the punk , which traverses along a wide break. “care with rope work is required” warned the guide, but bray decided to ignore that advice and so introduced more friction to the system than when someone mentions brexit at the end of a long family gathering (james kent – 2018). peering over the top he saw the other rope we’d brought still strapped to our bag at the bottom, laughing mercilessly at him. at this point in the day we began wondering if bray had ended up with all the harder leads of the challenge, but thankfully karma was waiting just around the corner in wheatcroft’s next block. first came cleft wing and cleft wing superdirect . warned by the guidebook that the short “may end up with a cleft skull”
